Albania, like Macedonia, is now the subject of an EU expansion for the first time in several years. Tirana, Albanian Tiranë, capital of Albania; 587 100 residents (2012). In addition to its administrative functions, Tirana has a large part of the country's industrial resources. Production includes food, durable consumer goods, graphic products, building materials and lightweight industrial products. Tirana has several universities and colleges and is the seat of the country's leading cultural institutions. The city is characterized by the interwar and occupation years, often designed by Italian architects, administrative buildings and villas, surrounded by the monumental buildings of the Socialist era and tenement barracks.

The site, which was inhabited during antiquity, acquired a central town character in the early 17th century, when a settlement was built by the Turks. Tirana replaced Durrës as the capital when Albania's independence was proclaimed in 1920.
