Yearbook 2018

Lesotho. The regional cooperation organization SADC's peacekeeping efforts in Lesotho ended in November after one year. The operation, known as SAPMIL, was extended in April for six months, but the SADC countries rejected the government's proposal to extend the operation further. Great contradictions existed between Prime Minister Tom Thabane and the opposition. Former Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili demanded in January that SAPMIL leave the country.

During the year there were several threats to jump off the process of stabilizing the country and introducing reforms of the constitution. SADC leaders criticized the Maseru government for the slow pace. In September, the talks were close to collapsing when the opposition protested against Thabane being shut down by Chief Justice Nthomeng Majara, who since 2014 has been chairman of the Supreme Court. She was accused of inciting violence after she challenged the government's decision to replace the chief of the Constitutional Court appointed by the previous government.

According to, Thabane replaced several ministers during the year. Three were dismissed, including the Minister of Health and the Minister of Tourism and the Environment, while the Minister of Defense resigned for personal reasons.
