Marshall Islands

Yearbook 2018

Marshall Islands. In November, Hilda C. Heine, the Marshall Islands' first female president, survived a vote of no confidence in Parliament by the smallest margin possible. Of the 32 MEPs present (one was absent), 16 voted in favor of dismissing the president. The most serious criticism of the opposition against Heine and her government was the plans to introduce a cryptocurrency, ie a digital or virtual currency, as legal tender in the country. According to the opposition, this had diminished the international reputation of the Marshall Islands. A law that would make a cryptocurrency possible next to the US dollar, which is the country's official currency, was passed in February. The law led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to warn of the risks and urged the government to carefully consider its decision.
