Republic of the Congo

Yearbook 2018

Congo. In May, General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko was sentenced to 20 years in prison. According to Countryaah.com, Mokoko was previously one of President Denis Sassou-Nguesso's close advisers but chose to run in the 2016 presidential election, an election that Sassou-Nguesso won. Now the general was accused of planning a coup against the president. The reason why Mokoko was arrested in June 2016 was a film shoot in which he expressed his support for a plan to have Sassou-Nguesso deposed. Seven other people were sentenced in their absence to 20 years in prison.

In August it was announced that the so-called Ninjamilis, active in the Pool region in the southern part of the country, had agreed to lay down their weapons. This is as a result of the peace agreement concluded at the end of 2017. The militia's leader, Frédéric Bintsamou (also called Pastor Ntumi), appeared in public for the first time in August since the agreement was signed.

In March, Congo, as one of a total of 44 countries, signed an agreement on a new free trade area, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The agreement was signed at a summit in Rwanda's capital Kigali. For this to take effect, the agreement must be ratified at national level.
