Algeria is located in northwest Africa. To the west of Algeria is Morocco and the Western Sahara occupied by Morocco. In the south Algeria borders on Mali and Niger and in the east on Tunisia and Libya. The state area is 2,381,741 km².

The north of Algeria is shaped by the Atlas Mountains. South of the mountains joins the Sahara. It takes up about 85% of the country’s area and is hardly populated. In the north of the Sahara area you can find some salt lakes. The longest river is the Cheliff with a length of 700km.

In the north on the Mediterranean coast there is a Mediterranean climate. The mean temperature is 25 ° C in August and 12 ° C in January. Precipitation predominates in winter and has an average of 500 to 1,000 mm of rain per year.

In the south of the country there is an extremely dry desert climate. In summer the temperatures reach up to 40 ° C. In winter it can drop below 0 ° C here. In the Sahara, the amount of rain precipitation is only 10 mm.

Flora and fauna
Algeria only has a forest share of 2%. 80% of the country is almost devoid of vegetation. Attempts are currently being made to counteract desertification with afforestation.

Macchie, Aleppo pines, cork oaks and holm oaks grow in the Mediterranean area. Atlas cedars, alfa grass and wormwood grow in the highlands. In the desert region, date palms can mainly be found at the oases.

Algeria’s fauna consists of gazelles, desert foxes (fenneks), mouflons, barbary macaques, occasional cheetahs, jerboa, snakes, lizards, scorpions and various species of birds.
