Asia – January temperatures
The temperature maps show the strong spatial, and with increasing geographical latitude, also seasonal differences in the Asian climate. While the average temperatures in Indonesia in January are over 25 ° C, in the interior of Northeast Asia temperatures of minus 45 ° C and less occur. Eastern Siberia is the real cold pole of the earth due to the strong thermal continentality of the climate.
COLD AND WARM EXTREMES
The high mean wind speeds of seven to nine meters per second are characteristic of the winter in North Asia; Peak values of 40 meters per second are even achieved over the open tundra. The superimposition of air temperature and wind-related cooling, the so-called wind chill, results in the world’s lowest effective temperature values. “Buran” is the name given to the cold and stormy north-east wind that can be observed in winter in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, north-west China, as well as in eastern Russia and western Siberia. Similar to the North American blizzard, it occurs as a result of polar cold air advances and is often associated with heavy snowfalls and snow drifts. In the tundra of Siberia, the Buran is also called “Purga”.
In summer, temperatures in Inner Asia rise well above 10 ° C on a monthly average. The 0 ° C isotherm now lies above the melting ice of the polar sea; the isotherms have turned from their meridional direction in winter (January) to a zonal direction in the west and in the middle of North Asia. The 20 ° C isotherm in Kazakhstan is north of the 50th parallel, which means that summer temperatures are on a level similar to that in Central and Northern Europe or even exceed it. At the same time, however, night frosts must be expected at any time. The summer warming is particularly evident in the Arabian region – the average temperature here rises above 30 ° C.
