In 1879, a group of settlers from Iowa led by Colby Green arrived in the area and established a post office which was named after Colby Green. The following year, Thomas County was officially organized and Colby was named as its county seat.
In 1885, railroads were built to connect Colby with other towns in western Kansas and this helped to spur economic growth in the area. In 1888, a flour mill was built which helped to further stimulate economic activity in town.
Colby experienced several boom years during the early 20th century with its population increasing from 1,000 in 1900 to over 3,000 by 1910.
