Malawi. According to Countryaah.com, Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi, a country located in Eastern Africa. Political maneuvering for the 2019 presidential election began this year already. The Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which is the second largest in parliament, demanded in July that President Peter Mutharika resign. The president, who represents the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was accused of receiving bribes from food company Pioneer Investments, equivalent to close to $ 4 million in exchange for government contracts. According to Mutharika, the charges were false and just one way to weaken him ahead of the upcoming election.
In November, the president implemented a government reform. Speaking was that Vice President Saulos Chilima was not mentioned at all when the new government was presented. Since the Vice President is elected together with the President, it should not be possible to fire him, as several political commentators pointed out. The reason for Chilima getting out in the cold was the fact that in July he launched the Political United Change Movement (UTM), of all things judging in order to form a political party and stand as a counterpart to Mutharika in the 2019 election.
Malawi was one of the countries that, at a meeting in Rwanda’s capital Kigali in March, signed an agreement on a new African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). To enter into force, the agreement must be ratified at national level. A total of 44 African countries have signed the agreement.
